"Planwydd"

Our Two Bedroom
"Cottage In the Trees"
Planwydd (almost sounds like "Plan-wood") is a Welsh place name,
brought to Palomar in the late 1890's by the Roberts family, who established a
resort on the south side of the mountain.
When we were growing up a half
century later, Mrs. Elsie Roberts was a wonderful source of stories about our
families and the old-time Palomar community where she spent her childhood.

An 1890's Planwydd Resort
Flyer ~ and ~ its snowy namesake,
circa 1948
Planwydd
cabin was built in the late 1940s by Charlie and Katie (Roberts) Beishline,
Elsie's daughter and son-in-law.
After Charlie's return from the Pacific
after WWII, he and Katie were keen on having a little weekend place of their
own on Palomar.
They built this wonderful cottage during their many trips to
the mountain. In those days there was no electric power available, so
Charlie did all the construction with hand tools (and a good deal of hard work) while his
young family helped out as best they could.
Today Planwydd holds a special place in all our hearts. As their
retirement home for 25 years, the cabin retains the charm and warmth of Charlie and
Katie. They will always be remembered as beloved members of the Bailey community.
So let's take a short tour of Planwydd.

Charlie's hand made stone fireplace is the centerpiece of the cozy living
room - which also has propane heating. There is the TV and VCR, as well as
a CD player/radio combo.
Here, there are lots of artifacts from a bygone era
a time when things were a good deal simpler.

Seems like
something was always cooking in Katie's kitchen.
At Christmas time we all looked forward to receiving a jar or two of Katie's preserves and jams.
The kitchen has all the usual amenities, including a stove,
range, microwave oven and coffee maker.

The Bailey area was finally blessed with power from good-ole SDG&E in 1949,
so Katie's woodstove became more a piece of furniture than
the cooking appliance it had once been.

Just off the kitchen is the Master
bedroom which contains a double bed.
The
bathroom is at this end of the
cabin as well, and sports a tube/shower combo.

Off the living room, the guest bedroom has both a twin
and double
bed.
Traditionally the kid's room (and later the grand-kid's room), it bespeaks the Beishline clan's eye for charming country-cozy detail.

Outside, the patio afforded Katie a squirrel's eye view of our little
neighborhood.
Here you'll find a propane BBQ, and the firewood stacked waiting for winter.
This is a great place to reflect on the nature of nature.

Our thanks to Charlie and Katie
for their many kindnesses over the decades - and the fond and fun memories we carry
with us to this day.
So how about that winter weather?
Planwydd
is available and accessible all year around.
It is located just off the paved (and snow-plowed) Bailey Meadow Road.

Planwydd can accommodate
up to five
persons
- and youngsters stay free
of charge.
Charlie would have wanted it that way!
