Cabins At
Bailey's Resort
A Short Introduction
As Bailey's Resort grew from our original family homestead of 1888, it
became clear that many visitors liked the simple rustic charms offered by a cabin in
the woods. As a result, by the early 1920s the Baileys had added dozens of guest
cabins to the resort.
Constructed mostly from local timber and stone, each cabin's interior was finished
by seasonal craftsman (like the gent shown below), using hand tools and our truck powered "portable" table
saw (c.1925).

Many of these wonderful old places are still a part of Bailey's, and some are now
becoming available as short term rental cabins.
Please take a moment to look over the Bailey cabins shown below, and consider a quiet weekend
in the woods, where you can still experience the peace and enchantment of decades past.

"The
Cedars"
Our One Bedroom,
Split Level Cabin
This cedar bark sided, split level cabin is almost entirely covered by the
forest canopy, making it cool and comfortable even on the warmest summer
days.
The Cedars is nestled in the forest at the head of our valley and
is exceptionally quiet. The Cedars is accessible only via a locked gate and it's own
unimproved access road.
The cabin comes fully
appointed and with all the usual amenities, as you can see below.
The living room has an
open beam ceiling made from the local cedar trees.
It shelters a stone hearth and fireplace opposite a cozy window seat
overlooking the forest.
Here you'll find the usual electronic gadgets, including a TV, VCR, CD/radio,
plus an
ornate, century old, upright piano - should the mood for live music strike.

The living room is also a great place to just kick back and enjoy the peace
and quiet.
The kitchen has all the
usual stuff, including a coffee maker, microwave oven, refrigerator, propane
stove and oven.
It also has a remarkable view of the forest, unspoiled by any other
structures (or any other folks for that matter).
Passing through French
doors, the bedroom has a king sized bed and full closet.
The bathroom (with shower) is centrally located off the hall.
For the kids (or the couple that drew the short straw) there are two living
room couches, or we can supply you with a couple of cots.
The rear patio contains a
platform rocker, redwood table with seating for four and a charcoal BBQ, making
it the spot for outdoor dining.
So how about that winter weather?
The Cedars is available all year around, and is accessible with
four-wheel-drive most of the winter.
Occasionally, heavy winter snows may require a hearty hike from the pavement,
but for those intrepid soles who brave the elements (after warming by the fire)
it makes the experience all the more enjoyable (not to mention sledding back
down the access road!).
The Cedars can accommodate up to four adults, or a family with a
couple of youngsters.
Pricing for The Cedars is based on the number of
persons in your group and the duration of your stay. Discounts are
available for three or more nights, and for mid-week rentals.

"The Lilacs"
Our Three Bedroom
Two
Story
Cabin
In the mid 1920s, Dr. Bailey had this lovely cabin built for his
mother-in law (and our great-grandmother) Elizabeth Erie Shaul, seen below on
the left enjoying her
shaded porch from the comfort of her Empire rocking chair.
"The Lilacs Cabin" - Then
and Now
For years, The Lilacs
served
as her private summer home while our family resort was in operation just down the road.
Now newly remodeled, with
two additional bedrooms below the main floor, The Lilacs still retains
the simple, rustic charm of those summer days long ago.
The magnificent stone fireplace is framed in the original redwood paneling,
now offset by a cedar lined open-beamed ceiling.
Across the room, a futon-style couch
opens out into a double bed.
Looking
through the same French doors that opened onto the original porch, the newly
installed windows frame the forest and provide a great view of our meadow and
the pond below.
This comfy sectional couch, where grandma's porch swing used to sit, provides
a second living space off the main room.
The
Lilac's kitchen has
all the usual amenities,
including refrigerator, gas range and oven, microwave, coffee maker and
dishwasher.
Note that the redwood cabinets, now offset by a new cobalt blue tile counter top, are the
same ones used by grandma during her summers here, some 80 years ago. They contain all the
tableware and utensils you'll need - and then some.
Directly off the kitchen is the upstairs' bathroom, with shower, which also
connects with the master bedroom.

The
master bedroom still has it's original redwood paneling in place, but now sports a queen sized
bed.
Decorated in a
southwest theme (as befits our location) this room commands a great view
of our pond in the valley below.
Downstairs, via an outside stairway on either side, are two adjoining rooms
with an
additional bathroom and shower. A kitchenette with a sink and coffee
maker give these connecting rooms the comfortable feel of a suite.
The east room (shown at right) has a single bed,
night table and couch.
Connected by an inside doorway the west room (as left) has a
double futon-type bed and adjoins the bathroom and shower.

From our valley below, looking southward toward The Lilacs, the
cabin looks much as it did when Adalind Bailey painted this water color in the
early 1940s.
The Lilacs can accommodate up to six adults, with room for a few youngsters
as well.
Pricing for The Lilacs is based on the number of
persons in your group and the duration of your stay. Discounts are
available for three or more nights, and for mid-week rentals.

"Planwydd"
Our Two Bedroom
Cottage In the Trees
An 1890's Planwydd Resort
Flyer ~ and ~ its snowy namesake
c.1948
Planwydd (almost sounds like "Plan-wood") is a Welsh place name,
brought to Palomar in the late 1890's by the Roberts family, who established a
resort on the south side of the mountain. When we were growing up a half
century later, Mrs. Elsie Roberts was a wonderful source of stories about our
families and the old-time Palomar community where she spent her childhood.
Planwydd
cabin was built in the late 1940s by Charlie and Katie (Roberts) Beishline,
Elsie's daughter and son-in-law. After Charlie's return from the Pacific
after WWII, he and Katie were keen on having a little weekend place of their
own on Palomar.
They built this wonderful cottage during their many trips to
the mountain. In those days there was no electric power available, so
Charlie did all the construction with hand tools and a good deal of hard work, while his
young family helped out as best they could.
Today Planwydd holds a special place in all our hearts. As their
retirement home for 25 years the cabin retains the charm and warmth of Charlie and
Katie, and they will always be remembered as beloved members of the Bailey community.
So let's take a short tour of Planwydd.
Charlie's hand made stone fireplace is the centerpiece of the cozy living
room - which also has propane heating. There is the TV and VCR, as well as
a CD player/radio combo.
Here there are lots of artifacts from a bygone era
- where things seemed simpler.
Something was always cooking in Katie's Kitchen.
At Christmas time we all would be getting a jar or two of Katie's preserves and jams.
The kitchen has all the usual amenities, including a stove,
range, microwave oven and coffee maker - although an automatic dishwasher never
did find its way into the place.
The Bailey area was finally blessed with power from good-ole
SDG&E in 1949, so Katie's woodstove became more a piece of furniture than
the cooking appliance it had once been.
Just off the kitchen is the Master bedroom which contains a double bed.
The bathroom is at this end of the cabin as well, and sports a tube/shower combo.
Off the living room, the guest bedroom has both a twin and double
bed.
Traditionally the kid's room (and later the grand-kid's room), it bespeaks the
Beishline clan's eye for country-cozy detail.
Outside, the patio afforded Katie a squirrel's eye view of our little
neighborhood.
Here you'll find a propane BBQ, the firewood stacked waiting for winter, and
a place to reflect on the nature of nature.
Our thanks to Charlie and Katie - for their many kindnesses over the decades
and the fond and fun memories we carry to this day.
Planwydd can accommodate up to five adults - and youngsters stay free
of charge - Charlie would have wanted it that way!

Pricing for Planwydd is based on the number of
persons in your group and the duration of your stay. Discounts are
available for three or more nights, and for mid-week rentals.
